  7. Thank you for downloading the virus definition update for Norton
  8. AntiVirus version 3.0.  This text file describes the contents of
  9. the .ZIP file and installation procedure.
  10.  
  11. Note: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 for Windows and DOS is 
  12. dated before 6-23-94, you will need to update it in order to detect the 
  13. SMEG (Pathogen and Queeg) and Natas viruses. Download the file NAVUP.ZIP
  14. and see NAVPATCH.TXT in that archive for instructions. This patch does 
  15. not update Norton AntiVirus 2.1.

  17. Please note the following exception:

  19. This patch program will not update the Norton AntiVirus Network 
  20. Manager. If you are using the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, 
  21. please contact Customer Service at (800)441-7234.

  25. All contents of this file have been scanned by Norton AntiVirus 
  26. 3.0 and are free from virus infection. The virus definition and 
  27. repair data included with this update are for use by Norton 
  28. AntiVirus 3.0 only. The virus definitions and repair data will 
  29. not work with any other software or any earlier version of Norton 
  30. AntiVirus. If you experience any trouble with this update, please 
  31. contact Norton AntiVirus Technical Support using any of the 
  32. methods listed in your user's manual.

  36. This update contains the following files:

  38. README.TXT      This text file contains instructions for 
  39.                 installing the new virus definitions.
  40.  
  41. AUG94.TXT       This text file describes what's new in this update.
  42.  
  43. VIRSCAN.DAT     This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus 3.0 to
  44.                 detect and repair viruses. This file completely 
  45.                 replaces the existing virus definitions in your 
  46.                 Norton AntiVirus 3.0 directory.
  47.  
  48. VIRSCAN.INF     This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus 3.0 to 
  49.                 display virus information, such as virus
  50.                 characteristics and behavior. This file is not 
  51.                 required to detect or repair viruses. To view this
  52.                 information, use the Virus List command in the
  53.                 Tools menu.

  57.                      Loading New Definitions
  58.  
  59. NOTE: The new virus definition files contained in this .ZIP file
  60.       replace the corresponding Norton AntiVirus 3.0 files. Only 
  61.       the most recent virus definitions are required to fully 
  62.       update your copy of Norton AntiVirus 3.0.

  66. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions:
  67.     
  68.     1. Copy VIRSCAN.DAT and VIRSCAN.INF into the Norton 
  69.        AntiVirus 3.0 directory.
  70.     
  71.     2. Scan a drive, directory, or file with Norton AntiVirus 
  72.        3.0, in either DOS or Windows.
  73.     
  74.        This will generate new interim files and update the
  75.        automatic protection TSR.
  76.     
  77.     3. Reboot your computer to load the updated automatic
  78.        protection TSR.
  79.  
  80.  TIP: If you unzipped this file inside your \NAV directory, 
  81.       (\NDW for users of Norton Desktop for Windows), then 
  82.       step 1 is already completed. If you unzipped this file
  83.       in a different directory, copy the extracted files to 
  84.       your \NAV directory.  If prompted to overwrite existing 
  85.       files, select Yes.
